*Objective:* To describe the experience that caregivers of relatives who
died of cancer went through at the time of death. *Materials and
methods:* Descriptive
study, based on Husserl’s phenomenological approach and Colaizzi’s method.
The study participants were 16 adults who performed the role of primary
family caregiver for more than six months, within an 8-18-month period,
before the in-depth interview. Descriptive and nominal codes were
identified and transcribed between January and March 2018. A cross-review
was performed. *Results:* The experience that the caregiver of a relative
who died of cancer underwent at the time of death was built from seven
themes: the end of a great battle; the present body and the absent soul;
feeling incomplete; wondering why; establishing the urgent; saying goodbye;
and looking for reasons to continue living. *Conclusions:* For the
caregiver of a relative who dies of cancer, facing the time of death causes
indescribable pain. Social, economic, psychological and spiritual factors
converge in this experience; therefore, it is necessary to overcome
obstacles and unexpected situations that, despite their difficulty, force
us to learn from them and find meaning.

The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of a preliminary
situation-specific theory of adaptation to high-risk childbearing for
expectant and new mothers and fathers. Roy’s Adaptation Model guided the
design and conduct of the pilot study of correlates of maternal and
paternal functional status from which the theory was derived. The
conceptual-theoretical-empirical structure for the study is displayed in a
diagram. The concepts of the theory—functional status, physical symptoms,
physical energy, psychological symptoms, and relationship quality--are
identified and defined, and their linkages are identified. Implications for
testing and potential use of the theory in nursing practice are discussed.

*Objective:* To identify fathers’ needs in their preparation as a companion
to provide emotional support to mothers during childbirth. *Materials and
methods:* An action research project was carried out involving twelve men
and their wives. Their educational needs were explored using focus groups
and structured interviews during 2015 and 2016. *Results:* The main
emerging themes were “knowing more about the birth process” and “being
there with her and for her” as benefits that contribute to the role of a
sensitive companion prepared to understand the woman’s needs. Considering
one of the major emerging themes, antenatal training for fathers as
companions and support during childbirth was developed, implemented and
evaluated. *Conclusion:* It is essential to consider different strategies
to strengthen the father’s role by increasing their skills for integration,
empowerment and support during birth, and to enhance their satisfaction in
meeting the needs felt in a family birth scenario.

*Objectives:* To reeducate pregnant women with high obstetric risk in
prenatal stimulation practices and to involve them in activities that
improve their quality of life while hospitalized. *Materials and
methods:* Qualitative
study with a participatory action research approach conducted during the
second half of 2015 and the first half of 2016, through sociodemographic
characterization, focus groups of knowledge of mothers’ experiences and
practices, negotiation of educational prenatal stimulation workshops,
performance of occupational activities, and evaluation of changes.
*Results:* Thirty-five pregnant women between 18 and 41 years old
participated. 80 % were diagnosed with preeclampsia and 50 % were less than
33 weeks pregnant. Differences and similarities were found in prenatal
stimulation knowledge and practices, as well as the need to improve them.
Negotiating educational workshops promoted the use and incorporation of
practices as meaningful occupational activities; making a toy for the baby
caused curiosity, exploration, occupational skills and consistent
performance in response to environmental demands. *Conclusions:* In
carrying out activities with sense and purpose, pregnant women incorporated
ability, effectiveness and enjoyment in the processes conducted. Being busy
allowed them to implement new ways of knowing and doing and motivated them
to find meaningful activities in relearning prenatal stimulation.

*Objectives:* To determine the relationship between alcohol-related risk
perception and alcohol use in Mexican adolescents and to identify alcohol
use prevalence, risk perception level and alcohol use patterns by sex.
*Materials
and methods:* Cross-sectional quantitative study with correlational design
using a probabilistic sample of 251 teenagers from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, in
2017. A personal data card, the Alcohol Use Risk Perception Questionnaire
and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) were employed.
*Results:* A higher alcohol-related risk perception level was associated
with lower use of this substance (rs = –.235, p <.001). The majority of
adolescents used alcohol sometime in their lives (59.0 %) and in the last
year (51.8 %). Risk perception and alcohol use patterns were not
significantly different by sex. *Conclusions:* Findings suggest
vulnerability to alcohol addiction in the study population. It is advisable
to delve, through multidisciplinary research networks, into levels of
perception of the risks of drug use to contribute to the production of
knowledge that guides preventive actions for teenage men and women.

*Objective:* To analyze the cases of elder abuse in a municipality in the
south of Minas Gerais (Brazil) over a 13-year period. *Materials and
methods:* Quantitative, retrospective, documentary, analytical study using
data from the Municipal Council of the Elderly. The collection of data for
the period between 2004 and 2016 took place in the first half of 2017. For
the trend analysis of cases of violence, simple linear regression was used.
*Results:* 389 reports were received, but only 273 described elder abuse.
As for the aggressor, 39.56 % were male and 43.59 % were children of the
victims. In relation to the type of violence, negligence stood out (34.80
%), followed by psychological (16.12 %) and financial violence (8.79 %).
There was a statistically significant relationship between the sex of the
victim (p = 0.017), victim-complainant relationship (p <0.001),
victim-aggressor relationship (p <0.001) and the type of violence.
*Conclusion:*Elder abuse in such municipality generally involves relatives
of the individuals. It is concluded that there is a need to train
professionals and prepare a complete, standardized tool for recording
incidents and expanding research in the area in order to take action to
fight elder abuse.

*Objective:* To verify item discrimination, content relevance and
measurement reliability of nurses’ knowledge and work in the palliative
care of individuals with a cutaneous malignant wound. *Materials and
methods:* Methodological, descriptive, correlational study carried out with
51 nurses from a philanthropic hospital in Paraiba, Brazil, during June and
July of 2017, who answered an instrument with 84 items referring to
knowledge and work in the palliative care of individuals with a cutaneous
malignant wound. For data analysis, SPSS for Windows, version 22.0, was
used with descriptive and psychometric statistics. *Results:* In verifying
psychometric properties, item authenticity had a Cronbach’s alpha higher
than 0.70 in all domains; therefore, we could make a theoretical assumption
on the phenomenon, in which the more the knowledge of the palliative care
of a person with a cutaneous malignant wound, the more the action of this
care. *Conclusions:* This instrument enables other professionals to adapt
the same methodology to other themes and to identify the specificities of
knowledge and work, which could bridge the gaps in nursing education,
especially palliative care.

*Objective:* The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the tools
used to evaluate the peristomal skin complications by an integrative
review. *Materials and methods:* A literature review was performed through
the following databases: Virtual Health Library (BVS), PUBMED/MEDLINE,
CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science, from January to February 2018. During
the search in the databases, the following descriptors were used: stoma,
colostomy, and dermatitis. The keywords were: tools, peristomal skin
complication and peristomal skin assessment. Studies were added to the
following inclusion criteria: articles published in Portuguese, English or
Spanish, full paper access, no time limit and they had to be about tools
for peristomal skin complications assessment. *Results:* The analysis
identified the existence of nine tools with different parameters to
describe peristomal skin complications. In general, they describe the
peristomal skin changes based on classification, the peristomal skin
complications or in the present clinical characteristics. The majority of
the tools have not tested psychometric measures. *Conclusion:* Four out of
the nine instruments identified have psychometric measures tested. The
nurse should be aware and must know the existing valid and reliable tools
to describe and classify how grave is the skin issue. This in order to give
an accurate diagnosis and to improve the care quality.
